Every Major Hotel Chain Just Launched an AI App. Here's What It Means for Independent Hotels.

Expedia, Accor, Wyndham, Hyatt, IHG — all live on ChatGPT or Claude in 2026. The chains moved fast. Here's the gap they left open, and why independent hotels may actually win.

Six months ago, zero hotel companies had a live AI app. Today, Expedia and Booking.com are live on ChatGPT. Accor launched in January. Wyndham became the first hotel company on Claude in May. Hyatt, IHG, and a dozen others followed. Lighthouse built a direct-booking ChatGPT app for any hotel that pays their subscription. DirectBooker — founded by the Tripadvisor founder and a Google Travel veteran — signed five of the ten largest hotel chains and went live on both ChatGPT and Claude.

The AI distribution race in travel is not coming. It has arrived.

What the chains actually built

Most chain apps follow the same pattern: natural language search over their own inventory → visual hotel card → click through to the brand website to complete the booking. Wyndham on Claude has exactly two tools: search properties and get property details. Accor's app covers 5,700 properties in 20 languages. IHG covers 7,000 properties in 100 countries.

These are solid implementations of a distribution pipe. What they are not is a discovery experience. Wyndham can tell you about La Quinta properties in Nashville. It cannot tell you about the best independent boutique on 12th Avenue South, because that hotel is not a Wyndham property and never will be.

The independent hotel gap — and why it's real

The chains have covered their own inventory efficiently. The OTAs (Expedia, Booking.com) cover broad inventory at 18–22% commission — the same model that has squeezed independent hotels on the web for fifteen years, now extending into AI channels.

Lighthouse and DirectBooker are both trying to fill the independent hotel gap, and they're worth watching. Lighthouse's approach is subscription-based: hotels pay to appear in their ChatGPT app. DirectBooker's approach is aggregation through channel managers — their SiteMinder partnership gives them access to 53,000 SiteMinder-managed properties that opt in.

Neither of these is a curated experience. Lighthouse's inventory is whoever pays. DirectBooker's is whoever's on SiteMinder and opts in. The result is a distribution pipe, not an editorial point of view.

What AI actually recommends

Independent testing of ChatGPT travel apps found something important: the underlying AI model drives hotel recommendations from its training data — the connected app adds live price and availability. This means the hotels that get recommended are the ones with the richest, most distinctive data: specific descriptions, named amenities, neighbourhood context, character that can't be summarised as "great location, friendly staff."

That's a profile that boutique and independent hotels naturally fit. A hotel with a 1920s art deco lobby, a rooftop bar with specific views, and a restaurant with a named chef is easier for an AI to recommend confidently than a property described by a single star rating and a price point.

What this means for independent hotels right now

The window for first-mover positioning in AI distribution is open. The chains have already moved. The OTAs have moved. The aggregators are moving. The boutique and independent hotel that gets into AI channels now — with rich, distinctive, accurate data — will hold a position that gets harder to claim as the market fills in.
